What Can Eyelid Surgery Do?
Excess skin and fat in the upper and lower eyelids can contribute to a tired appearance. Blepharoplasty is a delicate operation that removes fat and skin in way that results in eyes looking more open and alert. Most of our patients who undergo eyelid surgery later tell us that friends and family compliment them on looking more rested and relaxed.
Eyelid surgery treats:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
Your Eyelid Surgery
Patients undergo surgery on either their upper or lower eyelids, or both. Dr. Johnson locates the upper lid incision so that most of it is hidden in the lid's natural crease. He makes an incision in the lower lid so the resulting scar is just below the lower eyelash and is inconspicuous.
Blepharoplasty is sometimes performed using only a local anesthetic to numb the area. Having the patient awake when Dr. Johnson resects the eyelid skin is tailored so the minimal amount of the eyelid is removed. The procedure is usually done in Dr. Johnson's office. Patients typically take a few days off work, although individuals who want more privacy may take off more time.
Combining blepharoplasty with other facial rejuvenation procedures is fairly common. A brow lift, for example, is often performed during the same operation as eyelid surgery. Other aesthetic treatments that patients may combine with eyelid surgery include non-surgical procedures such as injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers.
