Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
One of the first aesthetic operations performed in history was to alter the nose for cosmetic reasons. Rhinoplasty performed by Memphis, Tennessee plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald J. Johnson is now done for both cosmetic and functional reasons, such as when the internal structures of the nose inhibit breathing.
If you are looking for a Memphis plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty, request a consultation online to meet with Dr. Johnson, or call our office at (901) 737-1050 and one of the friendly members of our staff will help schedule an appointment.
What Can Rhinoplasty Do?
The most common reasons patients come to Dr. Johnson's Memphis office for nose surgery is to make cosmetic changes. Men and women usually complain about a bump on the top of the nose, a tip that is too wide or droops, a nose that is too long from top to bottom, or one that sticks out too far.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can change:
- Nose size, in relation to the other facial structures
- Nose width, at the bridge
- Nose profile, with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
- Nasal tip, that is large or bulbous, drooping, or too upturned
- Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned
- Nasal asymmetry
Rhinoplasty is also an appropriate procedure to makes changes to internal structures if a patient has difficulty breathing.
Your Rhinoplasty Procedure
Cosmetic or functional rhinoplasty is an outpatient operation, usually performed with general anesthesia, and takes about 2 hours. Only in rare cases do we make any incisions on the outside of the nose. Through cuts made inside the nose, both bone and cartilage can be removed and reshaped.
In cases where a patient's breathing is difficult, we can obtain partial insurance coverage for the portion of the operation that addresses the airway. If the nasal deformity was caused by a documented traumatic event, such as being fractured during an athletic event, assault, or accident, insurance may cover the procedure. In these instances, a visit to the office and pictures with a letter to the company in advance is necessary to assure such coverage.
Patients considering rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons sometimes want other aesthetic procedures performed at the same time. Nose surgery can be combined with non-surgical treatments, such as injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic or fillers.
